Cheap supplies for painting on canvas?

I am looking for canvas, paintbrushes and tools, and paint?

I went online to look for some.. the canvases were pretty cheap but I was astounded at how expensive the paint was!

Is it cheaper to use acrylic or oil paint? I would like to use one of these.. could you give me links to a website that has cheap art supplies?

You can use either water based or oil paints on primed canvas. All the pre-stretched canvases you find online and in stores are primed with white acrylic or gesso. The less expensive paint is water based. I would suggest using acrylics.

The cheapest way to buy acrylics is in a starter set, not in individual tubes or jars. You can find several sets in craft stores like Michaels or discount art supply sites like Jerry's Artarama. If you buy a smaller set of five or six basic colors, you can mix them to make other colors (yellow and blue make green, yellow and red make orange, red and blue make purple, etc.)

You can often save a fair bit of money by buying some supplies at hardware stores. Many of the paints, primers, brushes, thinners and clear coats at the hardware store are a fraction of the cost of the very same things packaged up for the specialty art stores.
