What are the basic supplies needed for oil painting?

Canvas, or comparable painting surface, gesso if you are priming your own canvas or surface.

Long handled bristle brushes, in a variety of shapes and sizes (at least a big and little round, a big and little flat, a big and little filbert).

A good palette, you can either use a wooden palette or glass. Plexiglass doesn't work so well.

A variety of paint colors. At least your basic colors plus white, brown and black. Some artists will argue about black, so go with what makes you more comfortable.

You will also need some solvent, such as mineral spirits or turpentine for cleaning brushes or for broad washes. Dawn dish washing liquid also works really well for cleaning brushes, it gets all the oil out of the brushes and leaves the bristles soft.

You can go to most any bookstore and find a basic oil painting guide to get you started, or look up someone giving classes for beginners. Either source will give you a good starting point for colors and basic materials. What are the basic supplies needed for oil painting?
The most important thing is to have a well ventilated space you don't mind getting messy to paint in. This isn't something you can do at the kitchen table or a living area.

Paints, at least 6 colors plus white.

Long handled oil paint brushes: Several flats of different sizes, a couple of round brushes, a couple of different style palette knives, a wood or plastic palette, an easel (floor or table top) several clean old plastic or metal containers, oil painting medium, odorless solvent to clean brushes and thin paint, and lots of old rags.

That's why I am a watercolor painter and no longer paint with oils. What are the basic supplies needed for oil painting?
I posted a list of colors and brushes under your acrylics question. . . .
