What supplies are essential for painting a room?

I recently moved into a new house and it is time for me to start painting rooms here and there. I have never done this before. What items (other than the paint, of course) will I need to buy in order to get this done properly? And for a 10x10 room - approximately, how much paint will I need? What supplies are essential for painting a room?
paint brush, rollers, drop cloth, masking tape, a tray, probably 1 gallon will do. And dont forget to prime the walls. What supplies are essential for painting a room?
Go to a paint store, not a big box, first of all. An angled 2.5'; brush, a roller cover and roller handle, 1.5'; blue painters tape, and a roller pan are bare basics. When buying tools, don't go with the cheapest available. These will not only fall apart, but can show in the final job (filament falling out of brush, etc.). I would go in the middle of the price range for tools. For occasional home use, it's not worth it to buy the best professional tools. Buy a good quality paint. Most products will cover 350-400 square feet per gallon, so is you have 8 foot ceilings, count expect 1 gallon per coat. Better quality paints will be more durable, which leads to your room looking better, longer. Better paint will usually have a thicker consistancy, making it easier to apply, with less runs. Most products require 2 coats for optimum durability, but if you are using deep reds, blues or yellows, be prepared for more. How long has it been since the room was painted? I'd say if it has been more than 6-7 years, put a primer on first. The longer it has been, the more porous the walls will be. Then the first coat would soak in like a sponge, giving you less suare feet of coverage. If it is new construction, I'd also prime the walls, since builders have a tendancy to put up product that is good for the bottom line-not what is good for the homeowner. If you are vastly changing the color, you might want to have the primer tinted similarly to your finish color. Again I can't stress enough to use a store that is specifically a paint store. The knowledge and guidance that they can provide is worth the trip.
Here's a tools and materials list, along with step-by-step instructions on how to paint a room:

You won't need all these materials for every project, so check the explanations to see if a tool suits your project.

As for coverage, measure the height and width of each wall (don't worry about windows and doors) to find the square footage, then add the square footage of all the walls. Now check the paint can: it will tell you approximately how many square feet a gallon will cover. You'll probably need 10% more paint than that to account for spills, wastage, and having a little extra left over for future touchups.
a roller, a brush, something to put over the carpet encase you spill the paint, masking tape to put over the wood that you'll trim around, a metal paint bin (the thing you pour the paint into), a plastic cover for the paint bin, something to stir the paint with when you open it,l and something to open the paint.

hm i think that's all.
